P.J.

Reef Company

May 24, 2006 | by brett | Permalink

P.J. went to San Diego State University. As a Marketing junior, he was the captain of the surfing team. With his team needing surf sponsorship, P.J. wrote a business proposal to surf companies like Reef, Rip Curl and Hurley. Through his efforts, his team was soon sponsored by Rip Curl.

This same type of persistence landed him an intern position with Rip Curl. This would eventually develop into a full-time marketing position, which was offered to him two days before graduation. After working for Rip Curl, he was eventually contacted by Reef Company and offered a marketing job, which he gracefully accepted.

Since working at Reef, P.J. has worked on both regional events as well as international WCT tour events. He is currently planning a Reef tour (something that the PTP team can relate to!). Please visit their website at Reef.com!

P.J.’s advises that students need to be good writers and get an internship that ties into their interests. The writing skills will distinguish you from other applicants, while the internship will give you a head start on the competition.

THERE ARE 2 RESPONSES TO THIS INTERVIEW

First off, I want to say Pursue the Passion is a great idea and is worthy of much praise. Secondly, I can relate to being faced with choosing a direction and being torn between pursuing my passion and following the general flow of what I am surrounded with. This came in the form of choosing an undergraduate major here at my college of choice, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I decided on my passion, Math, and am currently studying it.
Being a surfer myself, I especially liked this bit about P.J. He was enthusiastic enough about his surf team to seek out a sponsor and look where it landed him, working on the WCT!
In the end, P.J.’s interview has shown that pursuing our passion will lead us on unexpected and satifying journeys. Again, I commend the creators of this project
and wish the best for its success.
