Fred Ulhman Jr.
Growing Up in Baseball
May 18, 2006 | by brett | Permalink
Fred Ulhman Jr. has been in baseball his whole life, and has been the Assistant General Manager to the San Diego Padres for the last ten years. He helped compile the San Diego Padres team that went to the World Series in 1998, and has been a key member of the front office, which produces a competitive team year after year.
Like most young boys, Ulhman dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player at the age of 5. His father was a minor league baseball player and later became a scout for 17 years. As a result, Fred was always around the game and constantly moving around the country. At the age of 16, Fred realized that his baseball talent wasn’t good enough to become a player, but his desire to stay in the game remained strong.
He graduated high school and enrolled in a junior college, at which point he managed to become an intern for the Baltimore Orioles. His first assignment was to enter information from scouting reports, which sparked his interest in the field of scouting. He worked his way up and in 1995 ended up joining the Padres as a Special Assistant to the General Manager (GM). One year later, Ulhman was hired as the Assistant to the GM.
His advice to anyone that wishes to be successful in anything is to have a desire for what you do and to make sure to enjoy what you’re doing. He also stressed the importance of honesty because without honesty there will cannot be a sense of trust from your employees , or in his case players that he manages. Ulhman says that gained trust is a vital part of any manager’s job.
