The Philosophy Behind Reef Company

May 18, 2006 | by brett | Permalink

Lindy Williams is the Public Directions director for Reef Company in San Diego, California. Lindy attended the University of Arizona and graduated in 2001 with a degree in marketing.

Lindy Williams

She started working for Surf Diva doing PR, helping out with the clothing company and even did a Reef surfing camp. After continuous persistence, she attained a full-time position with Reef and has been with them for the past three and a half years. Lindy loves working for Reef because every day her responsibilities are different. Her duties range from sales meetings to product placement. Reef has even sent her around the world to accompany the Reef girls on photo shoots.

Lindy admits that the environment at Reef Company helps her maintain her passion for public relations. Lindy’s great personality and work ethic allow her to build strong and lasting business relationships. Lindy advises students to pursue their passion by trying to figure out what industry or line of work they want to go into rather than jumping into a position right after school. .

One thing I did inquire about was the Reef girls…for obvious reasons. Lindy’s response to that was pretty interesting. She said that when the company was formed 20 something years ago, the Argentine owners wanted to establish themselves as a surf brand. In Argentina, they have beautiful girls everywhere and the culture does not look down upon showing that beauty by wearing little to no clothing on the beach. The owners decided to bring their cultural attitude to America. Now, many know Reef Company because of their unique marketing approach, but notice how the models’ faces are rarely shown. Reef Company wants to leave an element of mystery to the girls, much like the mystery of what could happen if you wear Reef clothing. My opinion is that is pure genius marketing, and I applaud both the idea and the beautiful ladies that have made the campaign what it is today.
